Eeeek! I’m scared!

Clint and I rented a new game last weekend called the Shadow of the Colossus. I hadn’t heard of this game prior to it’s release, but Clint was really excited to try it out. I was a little skeptical at first… it starts out with the main character riding a horse through the mountains, then he ends up in some sort of underground temple where he lays out his dead girlfriend on an altar. Then he pulls out his “ancient” sword and has a conversation with a strange voice about resurrecting his girl from the dead… Basically, you need to defeat all the colossi in order to bring her back to life.

The device that measures my blood… yuck.

I had a million appointments last week in order to learn how to monitor my blood sugars and eat the foods that will “hopefully” keep things normal. Unfortunately it means I have to prick myself 7 times a day. Once before every meal and again an hour after every meal and then one more time before bed for good measure… ugh. It’s going well though. I am extremely squeamish when it comes to needles and blood so I am amazed that I am handling this so well. But when it’s not about me it makes it a bit easier to take… we want baby to be healthy so I’ll endure whatever hell the doctors decide to put me through.

So far the readings are relatively normal. I’ve been following the meal plan that has been laid out for me and things are looking good. Except for yesterday when I tried to sneak in some french fries, it didn’t go over so well. The sugars shot way up and it actually took an entire day for things to get back to normal. I won’t be doing that again!

Anyway, all the enjoyment I used to get from eating food is gone and now I purely think of it as fuel for me and baby. It kind of sucks, but there’s only 2 months left to go!!

I’m trying to get a handle on eating healthy since I found out I’m glucose intolerant. I found a really great book which Sara recommended called the G.I. Diet (G.I. meaning Glucose Index). Basically, it teaches you how to eat certain foods that will not spike your blood sugar too high and keep them level throughout the day. It’s really simple and easy to follow. It has recipes at the back and a sample meal plan to get you started. I figured it would be good for me to try this as I still had to wait a week before I see the endocrinologist and dietitian. I’m definitely NOT going hungry as all the food is really filling and I must say I’m feeling a lot better ^__^.

Today I’ve made Cranberry Cinnamon bran muffins, which is one of the recipes in the book. They are high in fibre and protein and they taste pretty darn good. Nice and moist and not gritty or dry. I can freeze them and pull one out each day as a snack! I’m also attempting to make mushroom, beef and barley soup. My stock is simmering away so I will let you know how it turns out.

Okay, I got the second dreaded call from the doctor this morning. I have gestational diabetes. Crap. So I have to go see a dietician next Tuesday to see if I will be able to control it through diet and exercise. It’s not life threatening, but if I don’t get it under control the baby could get really fat and there could be problems delivering it. The baby will be fine… it just doesn’t bode well for my future. I have to take extra precautions because now I know I am high risk for developing the disease. This sucks.

It’s that time of year again. Time to eat the foods I’ve been craving like crazy. My mom has agreed to make me a roast beef for Thanksgiving dinner as well as a chocolate pie which I have been dying for. It’s only going to be the 4 of us as my brother is going to Kelowna to celebrate with his girlfriend’s family.

Well, I’ve made it this far through the pregnancy with no problems… until this morning. I got the dreaded call from the doctor’s office. I failed my glucose test. DOH!! So, now I’m stuck going for the 3 hour test where I will have nothing to eat or drink aside from sickly sweet orange pop and have 4 viles of blood drawn at various times within a 3 hour span. My worst nightmare… Anyway, she did say that my score of 8.5 was not far out of the range of a normal test so not to worry just yet… so, cross your fingers for me and baby and hopefully we do not have gestational diabetes. I’ll be bringing the PSP to keep my mind off of the test. Luckily Clint picked me up a copy of Burnout for PSP, yay! Thanks babe!

It’s now October and it is sinking in that the baby will be here very soon. Cleaning and making room has been my priority lately. We still have lots to do, but we made our very first “hardware” purchase yesterday afternoon! We decided to buy a travel system because having a car seat, stroller, and infant carrier in one seems ideal for us considering we don’t have much space. We don’t really NEED a car seat as we don’t have a car, but I have been told that the hospital will not allow you to leave without one, so this way we will be able to bring baby home!

The model we chose is the Evenflo Ellispa EX. It looks like the SUV of all strollers. I like the fact that it has a hood you can pull down to completely cover baby from the weather, but it still has a window… I’m sure I will need it living in this city. The infant carrier has an ergonomic handle so it’s easy to carry with one hand. Clint was happy with the way it looks as it is not bright blue with teddy bears on it, but rather brown and black and as stylish as a stroller can be I guess. Anyway, it’s folded up in the closet now awaiting the arrival of our baby. The next purchase will be a place for baby to sleep!!
